Utilities will pair firm capacity with AI-driven operations, flexible planning, and innovative finance to sustain affordability and reliability under stress.

Our goal is to draw upon research and experience from throughout our professional services organization, and that of coauthors in academia and business, to advance the conversation on a broad spectrum of topics of interest to executives and government leaders. Together, these shifts will redefine reliability as the ability to sustain capacity, agility, and resilience while keeping power stable, flexible, and affordable. AI will enable real-time optimization of dispatch, asset performance, and outage response, while stronger supply chains support infrastructure. Utilities face a pivotal year in 2026, as converging pressures demand that they scale both smarter and faster. In 2026, capital strategy is likely to be measured less by gross spend and more by capacity per dollar and bill impact per incremental megawatt.

More than 19,000 housing pockets have rooftop solar systems, benefits 9 lakh households The Times of India 6h It tracks what’s being deployed now, what’s quietly failing, and what still requires significant engineering work before it can operate at scale. Reliability is as central as sustainability, especially as energy systems become more complex and more interconnected. We also look at how energy demand is shifting, driven by electrification, data centers, AI workloads, industrial decarbonization, and transportation.

In a Deloitte survey of power and utilities executives (see “About the Deloitte survey”), grid infrastructure limitations emerged as the key challenge in providing reliable power to data centers.23 Other challenges including regulatory constraints and resource limitations vary across regions (figure 1). Many are upgrading legacy systems by investing in cloud-based ERP solutions and operational technologies, including geographic information systems (GIS) and automated metering infrastructure (AMI). “To succeed in the years ahead, utilities should balance the needs of meeting the growth in energy demand with continuing the energy transition path, hardening the grid to enhance reliability, managing the cost to the customer and transforming business models to be more customer-centric and digital-focused.” Over the past few years, lead times for critical grid equipment such as transformers and switchgear have stretched to multiple years (figure 3), while equipment and project costs continue to rise. Wholesale gas and electricity prices, geopolitical tensions — particularly around Russian gas supply — and the cost of upgrading grid infrastructure all feed into what consumers pay.
